First we took a bus to Highbury and Islington and from there the Overground to Richmond. The plan was to visit Orleans House Gallery and perhaps also Marble Hill House which is nearby.

However, when we arrived, we discovered that Orleans House was open every day of the week except? Monday. Perhaps we should have done our research a little better.
Never mind, we had our fall-back. Or so we thought. Unfortunately, it turned out that Marble Hill House is open to visitors only at the weekend. Strike two.
Nearby is a ferry that takes you across the Thames. The cost is ?1 per person and it is money well spent as it saves a long roundabout trek to a bridge. The ferry deposits you conveniently close to Ham House, which is where we went next.

We had visited Ham House, a 17th century house, before but were happy to visit it again. It was open, fortunately.
Ham House has extensive grounds beautifully laid out to resemble the original gardens. A project called the Garden of Reason is taking place. In this a number of sculptures and installations by relatively unknown? contemporary artists have been placed in the grounds. There was a free tour of these. Despite my scepticism about modern art, I went on the tour and did my best to treat the works seriously, hoping to learn something about modern art. Predictably, perhaps, my resolution was gradually eroded as we went round and finally crumbled completely.
Fortunately, the house itself soon restored my equilibrium and good humour. Photography is allowed (without flash). When we visited the house previously, there was scaffolding obscuring the fa?ade but today the outside was revealed in all its glory.
After our visit, we caught a bus to Richmond station and there boarded the train to Waterloo. Waterloo is next to the Southbank Centre (which we visited both yesterday and the day before) and in the Southbank Centre is one of our favourite restaurants, Canteen. So we repaired thither for supper before taking the bus back to the Angel.

Then you can decide whether it's really worth the trouble.
Whatever you're selling, it'll fetch a better price if it's in the best condition possible. If you have the original box and other materials, that's fantastic, and the more you've protected it from wear and tear, the better. Of course, if you'd rather not deal with strangers, you can try just selling to your friends using Facebook, or a service like List of Things for Sale.
It may seem like penny pinching (literally), but why pay extra fees and percentages of your sale when you don't have to? For example, try a service like Amazon WebPay instead of Paypal, or use a bit of simple HTML to embed extra photos on an eBay listing without incurring fees. Keep track of what fees you're paying as you sell, and Google around to see if there's a way around them. You might be able to make a few extra bucks off your sale.
Like a high quality photo, you should make sure your listing doesn't fall into any of the unprofessional traps that can make you look like a scammer. A detailed description, proper grammar, and honesty about its condition can go a long way. Check out our checklist for remembering the important details and make sure you sound reliable. You're likely to get a lot more hits (and money) if you do.
The more people see your listing, the quicker you'll sell your stuff (and the better prices you can get for it). There are a lot of tricks to maximizing the eyeballs on your page, depending on the site you use. For example, you should end your eBay auctions between 6:30 PM and 10:30 PM, when most people are browsing the site and your soon-to-end listing will be at the top. Similarly, if you're on Craigslist, you should edit and repost your listing regularly so it stays at the top of the search results. Selling in a nearby, more popular (or richer) neighborhood can help a lot, too. You should also check and make sure your listing is spelled correctly.
Patience will likely get you better results than being hasty, but if you want to sell your stuff quickly, there are a few things you can do. You can bundle items together, use services like eBay Instant Sale, or try Amazon's Fulfillment program. It won't necessarily get you your money quicker, but you'll take a lot of the selling and shipping burden off yourself, which can be invaluable.
Unfortunately, when it comes to dealing directly with other people, sometimes someone will try to screw you out of your well-deserved money. Know what you can do to avoid getting screwed online, and know the rules for your specific site, too. Craigslist has its own anti-scam strategies, and you can use more dastardly methods to deal with eBay deadbeats.
