The White House has released a photo of President Barack Obama firing a gun, two days before he is set to travel to Minnesota to discuss gun control. It shows Obama shooting at clay targets on the range at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland, where he says he engages in the sport "all the time."

The image was released at a time when Obama is pushing a package of gun-control measures in response to the Newtown, Conn., school shooting. But the image of a U.S. president holding a gun is certainly nothing new. A number of men who have held the highest office in America have been pictured holding guns, from Theodore Roosevelt to George W. Bush.

5 Super Bowl ads that enlist viewer help

Advertisers are finding new ways to get viewers into the game during Super Bowl XLVII, which airs on CBS on Sunday. Here are 5 campaigns that enlist viewer help in one form or another.

1. Coca-Cola created an online game that pits a troupe of showgirls, biker-style "badlanders" and cowboys against each other in a race to find a Coke in the desert. Viewers are encouraged to vote for their favorite group and set up obstacles that delay other groups on CokeChase.com. Obstacles include a traffic light or getting a pizza delivered, which both waste time. Coca-Cola's online game is alluded to in a Super Bowl ad and the winning group ? which has the most "for" votes and the least "obstacle" votes will be announced after the Big Game. Coke will also give the first 50,000 people who vote a free Coke.

2. For its halftime intro spot, Pepsi, the sponsor of the Super Bowl halftime show, created a collage of 1,000 user-submitted photos that are stitched together to create a 30-second video that looks like one person jumping to the tune of Beyonce's "Countdown." The spot introduces the pop star's halftime show.

3. Toyota invited people to submit photos of themselves on Instagram or Twitter between Jan. 2 to Jan. 12 with the hashtag (hash)wishgranted. The photos were entered into a contest to win a spot on Toyota's Super Bowl ad. The ad stars Kaley Cuoco from CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" granting wishes. A photo of the winner, Ryan Koch of Fitchburg, Wis., will be featured in the ad.

4. Ford Motor Co. enlisted late-night talk show host Jimmy Fallon to choose road trip stories submitted via Twitter with the hashtag (hash)steerthescript for its Lincoln Super Bowl ad. The story line of the Lincoln ad was developed from 6,117 Tweets and stars rapper Joseph "Rev Run" Simmons and Wil Wheaton, who acted in "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

5. Audi let viewers choose one of three possible endings for its Game Day spot by voting online on Jan. 25 for 24 hours. The ad shows a boy who gets enough confidence from driving his father's Audi to the prom to kiss his dream girl, even though he is then decked by her boyfriend. Audi allowed people to vote for one of three potential endings for the ad.

In one possible ending, the boy drives home alone in triumphant. Another ending shows him palling around with friends. The third shows the boy going home and finding a prom picture of his parents in which his dad has a similar black eye.

The first ending, called "Worth it," won. Audi, which declined to say how many people voted, said "Worth It," was by far the most popular, getting more than half of the total views and the most "thumbs up" out of all three versions.

the characters in this RP doesn't have to be bullies, but they all participated in the bullying for whatever reason. I'm not sure if any of you watched a movie called Tamara, but, one of the guys who participated was threatened by the others to videotape the bullying (even though he didn't want to). So, no you don't have to make a character who actively bullied Dorothy, but some of you will have to be.

SFU, Fraser Health poised to become medical technology leaders

Research endowment links SFU, Fraser Health as medical technology leaders Simon Fraser University and Fraser Health Authority are poised to become leaders in medical research and technology innovation with the launch of a $5.25 million Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation B.C. Leadership Chair in Multimodal Technology for Healthcare Innovation.

The Hon. Stephanie Cadieux, Minister of Children and Family Development, today announced the appointment of Simon Fraser University neuroscientist Dr. Ryan D'Arcy to the Leadership Chair.

With a goal of improving the lives of patients through innovation, D'Arcy will combine health research and technology by linking the Faculty of Applied Sciences at SFU with the medical expertise at Surrey Memorial Hospital and elsewhere in the Fraser Health region.

D'Arcy brings a focus on neurotechnology to further understand the brain and help patients with devastating brain illness and traumatic brain injuries. He will lead the development of a diverse and prosperous medical technology sector, starting with neurotechnologies for advanced diagnosis and treatment at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

Born and raised in B.C., D'Arcy was attracted home from his role as the head and senior research officer of the Institute for Biodiagnostics in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a world-renowned Institute that he founded in 2002.

During his time there, D'Arcy raised over $50 million in investment and established a critical mass of scientists, engineers, and clinicians focused on health technology products to help neurological patients.

He has been instrumental in leading the development of devices, including: the Halifax Consciousness Scanner, a portable scanner to evaluate brain status following trauma; brain imaging technology applications to help Captain Trevor Greene rewire his ability to walk following an attack in Afghanistan; and the world's first virtual reality rehearsal for removal of a brain tumour.

The Chair was created through a partnership with $2.25 million in funding provided by government's Leading Edge Endowment Fund (LEEF), and SFU and Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation each contributing $1.5 million. Fraser Health Authority is developing lab space for the Chair position, and will provide access to clinical facilities and resources at Surrey Memorial Hospital, the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, and other healthcare facilities.

Auto loan rates fell to record lows in Bankrate's weekly survey.

The average rates for 48-month new-car and 60-month new-car loans each slid 1 basis point to 4.04 percent and 4.12 percent, respectively, the lowest they've been since Bankrate began surveying auto loan rates in 1985. A basis point is one-hundredth of 1 percentage point.

Used-car rates also set an all-time low, with the average rate for a 36-month used-car loan lopping off 3 basis points to 4.71 percent.

Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is stepping down after four years, according to a report by The Washington Post. LaHood, a former Republican congressman from Illinois, waged a national campaign against distracted driving, negotiated to create a 54.5 mpg fuel-economy standard and dealt with a massive recall at Toyota over unintended acceleration. LaHood will remain in the office until a successor is confirmed, according to the report.

GDP contracts on tepid inventories, government spending drops

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The economy unexpectedly contracted in the fourth quarter, suffering its first decline since the recession ended more than three years ago as businesses scaled back on restocking and government spending plunged.

Gross domestic product fell at a 0.1 percent annual rate after growing at a 3.1 percent clip in the third quarter, the Commerce Department said on Wednesday.

That was the worst performance since the second quarter of 2009 and showed the economy entering the new year with no momentum, but economists cautioned against reading too much into the decline in output.

"You got a combination of inventories and defense which are taking more than 2 percentage points off the growth rate," said Nigel Gault, chief U.S. economist at IHS Global Insight in Lexington, Massachusetts. "This is not an indicator of recession."

Still, the contraction, coming against a backdrop of tightening fiscal policy, could create an urgency for policymakers to deal with outstanding budget issues.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected output to increase at a 1.1 percent rate. None of the economists surveyed had predicted a contraction.

A pick-up in consumer spending and a rebound in business investment curbed the slide in output and offered some hope for the recovery, which will be severely tested as Washington tightens its belt.

A second report showed private employers stepped up hiring in January, suggesting an improvement in the labor market. An increase in job gains could help the economy to weather the headwinds in the first half of the year.

The ADP National Employment Report showed private payrolls rose 192,000 in January after increasing 185,000 in December.

U.S. Treasury debt prices rallied on the GDP number, while the dollar fell. Stock futures extended losses.

The data were published as officials at the Federal Reserve wrap-up a two-day meeting. The report will likely provide ammunition for officials at the U.S. central bank to stay on their ultra-accommodative policy stance.

Economists say a growth pace in excess of 3 percent would be needed over a sustained period to significantly lower high unemployment. The economy has struggled to hold above a 2 percent growth pace.

For the whole of 2012 the economy grew 2.2 percent.

The economy was slammed by a monster storm in late October, which caused extensive damage along the East Coast, which was expected to have cut around 0.5 percentage point off fourth-quarter growth.

The recovery also had to deal with uncertainty over the so-called fiscal cliff of scheduled tax hikes and budget cuts, which hurt confidence even though data suggests that households and businesses largely shrugged off the worries.

SOME BRIGHT SIGNS

Businesses, caught with too much inventory in their warehouses in the third quarter, slowed their stock building in the final three months of the year.

That slowdown sliced 1.27 percentage points from fourth-quarter GDP growth. That was the biggest drag in two years. Excluding inventories, the economy grew at a 1.1 percent rate, slowing from the third quarter's 2.4 percent.

Government spending tumbled at a 6.6 percent rate, as defense outlays plunged at a 22.2 percent pace, wiping out the previous quarter's gains. Government subtracted 1.33 percentage points form growth. The decline in defense spending was the largest since 1972.

Export weakness also weighed on growth. Exports have been hampered by a recession in Europe, a cooling Chinese economy and storm and strike-related port disruptions. Overall trade cut a quarter of a percentage point from GDP growth. Exports fell for the first time since the first quarter of 2009.

But not all the details in the report were bleak.

Importantly, consumer and business spending showed some strength, and income available to households after taxes and inflation increased substantially in the fourth quarter.

In addition, the saving rate increased to 4.7 percent from 3.6 percent in the third quarter, which should support future spending.

Consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of economic activity, rose at a 2.2 percent rate, accelerating from the prior quarter's 1.6 percent growth pace.

Business investment rebounded after its first drop in 1-1/2 years in the prior quarter. The housing market was another bright spot. Residential construction grew at a 15.3 percent rate after notching a 13.5 percent growth pace in the third quarter.

Homebuilding added to growth last year for the first time since 2005.

Football Whoopie Pies
Ingredients:

• 6 tablespoons (3 ounces) shortening
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 large egg
• 1 cup milk
• 5 tablespoons cocoa
• 2 1/4 cups flour
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 2 teaspoons vanilla
• 1/2 teaspoon salt

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350?. Cream together shortening and sugar. Add egg and vanilla, beating well until blended. In a bowl whisk together the flour, cocoa, salt, and baking soda. Slowly beat in the flour mixture, alternating with milk, until blended. Using a cookie scoop, drop onto greased baking sheets. Then using a toothpick or butter knife to gently create points on either side of the circle, creating the shape of a football. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until firm. Cool on racks then fill with filling, below.

Cream Cheese Frosting

Ingredients:

• 1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, room temperature
• 12 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
• 1 pound (4 cups) confectioners sugar
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions:
With an electric mixer on medium high speed, beat butter and cream cheese until fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Reduce speed to low. Add sugar 1 cup at a time, and then vanilla, mixing until smooth and combined, scraping down sides of bowl as needed. If not using immediately, frosting can be refrigerated up to 3 days in an airtight container. Bring to room temperature again before using.

Assembly:
Fill a piping bag fitting with a star tip with your cream cheese frosting. ?Flip one of your Chocolate Whoopie Pies over so the bottom is facing up. ?Starting from the perimeter, frost your whoopie pie, working your way in, until the entire circumference is frosted. ?Gently press the bottom side of another whoopie pie on top, creating a ?sandwich?. Use the remaining cream cheese frosting to pipe football laces onto the top of each whoopie pie.
