Solar Eclipse Day! Time for a 'Ring of Fire'

During the annual eclipse, the moon will travel in front of the sun, blocking its light -- except for a so-called "ring of fire" around the edge. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

It's time to put on your eclipse glasses, prepare your pinhole projectors or scout out a sun-watching website: The first annular solar eclipse to pass through the United States in 18 years is on its way.

The moon will start eating away at the sun's disk around 5 p.m. ET today ??although that's early Monday morning in Asia, where the eclipse begins. A wide swath of the world between south China and the American Midwest will see a partial solar eclipse, due to the moon's position between Earth and sun. And along a roughly 200-mile-wide track, skywatchers can witness a "Ring of Fire," in which just a thin ring of the sun's disk remains uncovered. There'll be no total eclipse this time around, because the moon is too far away in orbit to match the sun's apparent size. Nevertheless, it's a sight not to be missed.

Here are seven things you need to know about witnessing the eclipse:

Seeing the big picture: Solar eclipses occur when the moon, sun and Earth line up closely enough for the moon to throw its shadow on earthly locations. Annular eclipses, which create that fiery ring around the moon, are actually rarer than total eclipses because the moon has to be relatively far away in its orbit. Check out this interactive for the graphic details.

Seeing it in Asia: The moon's shadow races eastward across Earth's surface at more than 2,000 mph, starting in China's southern Guangxi Province. Theoretically, the "Ring of Fire" could be visible just after 6 p.m. ET over Asian urban centers such as Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macau, Taipei, Osaka and Tokyo. But for many of those cities, the weather outlook isn't that great: Cloudy skies or even thundershowers are in the forecast.

Seeing it in America: The partial eclipse begins over the U.S. West Coast and Canada around 8 p.m. ET, and even earlier in Alaska. Skywatchers in portions of Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas can witness the "Ring of Fire" effect at its peak after 9 p.m. ET. As you go farther east, sunset becomes the limiting factor. The U.S. East Coast, for example, will miss out on all phases of the eclipse. Consult NASA's clickable map to find out what will be visible from your locale. The times are listed as UTC, so subtract five hours for Central Daylight Time, six hours for Mountain Time, and seven hours for Pacific Time. Don't forget to check the weather, too.

Seeing it safely: Experts emphasize that you should never gaze at the sun without appropriate eye protection, even when the solar disk is almost completely blocked by the moon during an annular eclipse. You can look at the sun through specially designed eclipse-viewing glasses, or through welder's glass. Those are in short supply now, but you might still be able to find the right equipment at national parks, science centers and other eclipse hot spots. You can also create a pinhole projector with supplies as simple as a sheet of paper, aluminum foil and a box. Or you can just look at the weird crescent-shaped and ring-shaped patterns created when sunlight streams through the trees. Check out this safety guide for more tips.

Seeing it online: If you're outside the eclipse zone, or if cloudy skies spoil your view, you can still choose from more than a dozen webcasts that are promising to follow the phenomenon. If one webcast isn't working, try another. Here's a list of the webcasts we've come across.

Seeing the next sky spectacular: The annular eclipse is a treat, but it's not the end of this year's big sky shows. If you have the right equipment ? for example, a telescope or a pair of binoculars equipped with solar filters?? you can watch the June 5 transit of Venus. (This will be the last such transit until 2117.) There's a total solar eclipse coming up on Nov. 13 that can be seen from Australia and the Pacific, as well as via the Internet. And in five years, totality will make a huge splash across the United States, for the first time since 1979. Sunday's event will provide good practice for all these coming attractions. ?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Reds manager Dusty Baker went deep into his dominant bullpen to find someone who could put away the New York Yankees.

Jose Arredondo worked out of a ninth-inning jam for his first major league save, Joey Votto hit a three-run homer and Cincinnati held on for a 6-5 victory Saturday.

New York scored twice off Sean Marshall in the ninth, but Baker pulled his regular closer in favor of Arredondo and he got the job done.

"I could have done without the drama, but we did win the game," Baker said.

Arredondo entered with two on and one out, and Derek Jeter grounded his first pitch to third. Cincinnati nearly turned a game-ending double play, but Jeter just beat the relay. Even Votto thought the Reds had it won ? he clenched his fist when he caught the ball at first base, hoping the game was over.

Curtis Granderson then fouled off a 3-0 pitch before topping a slow roller to Votto for the final out.

"It wasn't fun the way it ended," Votto said. "Well, I take that back. It was fun the way it ended. Just a little bit nerve-racking at the end, but that's part of wins and losses and it was nice for Jose to come in and pick us up."

Brandon Phillips got Cincinnati started with a run-scoring single and the Reds overcame Ivan Nova's career-high 12 strikeouts to improve to 2-2 during their five-game visit to both New York ballparks this week.

Homer Bailey (2-3) pitched effectively into the seventh inning for the second consecutive outing. Cincinnati then turned it over to its normally lights-out bullpen and held on to hand New York its fourth loss in five games.

"We just didn't get the last hit that we needed," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It's good that we're able to come back, but it's frustrating that you get so close and lose."

Logan Ondrusek retired Jeter on a shallow fly with two on to end the seventh. Cuban flame-thrower Aroldis Chapman, hitting 99 mph on the stadium scoreboard, whiffed Granderson and Robinson Cano in a perfect eighth.

Raul Ibanez doubled to start the ninth and scored on Nick Swisher's single, snapping New York's 0-for-22 skid with runners in scoring position. Marshall threw a called third strike past Russell Martin, but Andruw Jones singled to put runners at the corners and Jayson Nix singled to make it 6-5.

That's when Baker went to Arredondo.

"I didn't really like the matchup there at the end with all those righties coming up there against Marshall," said Baker, who hinted that he might consider moving Chapman into the closer role soon.

Martin and Nix homered for the Yankees on a beautiful, 74-degree day when three balls barely cleared the short porch in right field.

Bailey, drafted seventh overall in 2004, was 0-1 in his previous four starts since beating the Cubs on April 20 for the franchise's 10,000th victory. The 26-year-old right-hander struck out seven and walked one in his first outing at Yankee Stadium.

"Overall, pitched a good game," he said. "I'd be lying if I said the anticipation wasn't there. The first couple pitches it looked like the plate was about 100 feet away."

With the score tied 2-all, No. 9 batter Wilson Valdez singled leading off the Cincinnati fifth and Chris Heisey followed with a bunt single. One out later, Votto got just enough of an inner-half slider from Nova (4-2) to drive it over the auxiliary scoreboard in right-center.

Five of Votto's seven homers this season have come in the last seven games, including a three-homer performance Sunday against Washington that he capped with a game-ending grand slam.

"I'm starting to make progress," the 2010 NL MVP said.

Nix homered in the bottom half to cut it to 5-3. An eighth-inning throwing error by Yankees reliever David Phelps led to Mike Costanzo's sacrifice fly.

Nova had no problem with the bruised and sprained right foot that knocked him out of Monday night's start at Baltimore in the sixth inning. Flashing a sharp curve, he struck out eight in the first three innings and had 11 strikeouts after five, surpassing his previous career high of 10.

The right-hander got himself in trouble with consecutive walks in the first and Phillips put the Reds ahead with an RBI single. Devin Mesoraco and Heisey both doubled in the second to make it 2-0.

It was an early breakthrough for the Reds, silenced by 39-year-old Andy Pettitte in their first shutout loss of the season Friday night.

Martin homered on the first pitch of the third and New York tied it on Ibanez's two-out RBI double in the fourth. Nova allowed seven hits and two walks over six innings in his second loss since a 15-game winning streak.

"I don't care about strikeouts," Nova said. "I don't like the way I'm pitching right now. I'm making a lot of mistakes."

NOTES: The series finale Sunday features an excellent pitching matchup. Reds RHP Johnny Cueto (4-1, 1.89 ERA) faces Yankees ace CC Sabathia (5-1, 3.77). Cueto's 2.20 ERA over the past two seasons is the best in the majors. ... Cincinnati rookie SS Zack Cozart, with one hit in his last 26 at-bats, was not in the lineup. Valdez started in his place and moved to third when Cozart entered for defense in the eighth. ... Costanzo got his first major league start (at DH) and singled in the sixth for his first career hit.

Buffett's Berkshire to buy Media General papers

NEW YORK (AP) ? Billionaire Warren Buffett's company is making its largest foray into newspapers yet, agreeing to buy 63 papers from Media General Inc.

Richmond, Va.-based Media General says the $142 million deal includes the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the Winston-Salem Journal. The company is selling all its papers except those in Tampa, Fla., most importantly the Tampa Tribune. Media General says it is in talks with others for those papers.

Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. has owned the Buffalo News of New York for decades and recently bought its hometown paper, the Omaha World-Herald.

Buffett has defended newspapers. He has said that even though they face competition from the Internet, they will have a decent future if they continue delivering information that can't be found elsewhere and stop offering news free online.

TORONTO (AP) ? Brett Lawrie of the Toronto Blue Jays has been suspended for four games by Major League Baseball after he threw his batting helmet and it bounced off an umpire.

The penalty was imposed Wednesday and included an undisclosed fine.

Lawrie is appealing and can playing until there is a decision. He was in the starting lineup Wednesday night against the Yankees.

The third baseman was ejected by plate umpire Bill Miller after arguing a called third strike in the ninth inning of Tuesday night's 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay.

Lawrie slammed his helmet near Miller's feet and it ricocheted up and hit the umpire in the right hip.

Toronto manager John Farrell says Lawrie hopes to apologize to Miller. The same umpire crew was set to work the game.

Steve Jobs? life will be brought to the big screen by Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin in a movie based on Walter Isaacson?s best-selling biography of the enigmatic co-founder of Apple, maker of iPods and iPads.

Sony Pictures Entertainment on Tuesday unveiled plans to put Sorkin, who wrote Facebook film ?The Social Network,? behind the screenplay of what will be a major release for the movie studio.

?There is no writer working in Hollywood today who is more capable of capturing such an extraordinary life for the screen than Aaron Sorkin; in his hands, we?re confident that the film will be everything that Jobs himself was: captivating, entertaining, and polarizing,? Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, said in a statement.

Sorkin will adapt Isaacson?s best-selling biography that topped book charts and became the top-seller of 2011 following Jobs? death last October after a long battle with cancer.

Sorkin won a best adapted screenplay Oscar for his work on ?Social Network? in 2011, and was nominated for a best writing Oscar in 2012 for ?Moneyball.?

He also penned TV political drama ?The West Wing? and is the creator of upcoming HBO? ?The Newsroom,? a behind-the-scenes look at a fictional cable news channel.

HTC Desire C is official - ICS, NFC and Beats on a 3.5-inch screen

New budget phone from HTC coming to Three, Orange and T-Mobile UK

After a series of leaks, it looks like the HTC Desire C is finally official. The new entry-level device from HTC has been announced today, and in the UK it looks like it'll be heading to Three, Orange and T-Mobile. The Desire C looks like an upgraded version of last year's Wildfire S -- it's got a 3.5-inch HVGA display, a 5MP camera, Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, Beats Audio software enhancements and NFC capabilities. There's no official word on what's powering the Desire C, but pre-release reports point to a 600MHz Snapdragon processor.

Three has yet to announce its pricing, but T-Mobile will offer the Desire C for free on 2-year contracts from £15.50 per month, and it'll also sell the phone on Pay As You Go for £169.99. Orange UK will offer the same PAYG price, but a slightly higher monthly fee of £20.50 if you're after a free Desire C on contract. Release is slated for sometime in June, and in the UK it'll be available in black and white, while international markets will also get a red version.
