It?s often occurs for a fit woman to take it a step further with her physique to compete in a bodybuilding show. However, when asked what she?s competing in; she?s baffled. A first time female competitor commonly assumes that ?bodybuilding is just bodybuilding,? but when asked what she expects to look like; answers vary. Some want to look fit, hard, very muscular, or soft and curvy. Novice competitors will find that the answers are divided into separate bodybuilding divisions.
Female bodybuilding
Female bodybuilding is the division that created history with female physiques like Rachel Mclish, Lenda Murray and Cory Everson. Their looks were full, with solid muscle. However, over time the division has changed and female bodybuilders are coming in much larger, and harder.
Female bodybuilders perform barefoot on stage, and wear a solid color suit for prejudging. At the night show female bodybuilders can wear an adorned suit and jewelry.

Fitness
Fitness combines hard bodies with gymnastic talent. Fitness athletes perform a two minute routine that includes gymnastics, and four specific strength movements. They are:
- Push up (of any kind)
- High kicks
- Straddle hold
- Side split
Novice athletes are commonly concerned that they must have a gymnastics background. However, International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness [IFBB] Pro Adela Garcia; five time Miss Fitness Olympia winner, does not have a gymnastics background.

Figure
Figure was the culmination after fitness. It offers women the choice to compete in the physique round without doing a fitness routine. The look was hard and full, but over time the judges have rewarded softer figure looks. Figure athletes, like the fitness athletes, have a spotlight walk with four mandatory quarter turns.
Bikini
Bikini began several years ago, and has been a popular choice for women. The physiques are usually softer on the local levels, while NPC national and IFBB pro level competitors are lithe and svelte, and with good muscle tone. The overall presentation is extremely important, and is paired with an equally important model walk.
Women?s Physique Division [WPD]
Are you more muscular and harder than a figure competitor, but not big enough to compete in female bodybuilding? In that case, you may be a perfect fit for the WPD. The NPC?s/ IFBB?s development of the women?s physique division creates a home for female bodybuilding athletes who are at crossroads. Some female athletes are too big and hard for figure, while others do not carry enough mass to compete in female bodybuilding. This is a good transition for women trying to fit into a division without extremely altering their physiques.
